United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) laid Sunday the cornerstone for the Saudi project to re-house homeless refugee families in Rafah. In a press release, UNRWA revealed that Kingdom of Saudi Arabia generously contributed of $20 million to fund the project. "The fund will cover the construction of new shelters for over 800 homeless refugee families, three schools, a health centre, a mosque, a community centre, a market area and all related infrastructure works and the project willprovide hundred thousand days of temporary employment for labourers, in an area where the level of unemployment are alarmingly high," UNRWA added.

According to its statistics, UNRWA has already completed building 925 new homes for 996 homeless refugee families in the Gaza Strip and several hundred additional housing units is currently underway.

For her part, Karen Koning AbuZayd, UNRWA Commissioner General expressed her profound gratitude for the generous and continued support from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for Palestine refugees and she extended her appreciation to Palestinian National Authority for making available the land required for the project.
